Get Out of Your Own Way

How frequently have you said to yourself, “Gee, I wish I could stop doing that!” or “If I could only be more…”. You get the picture. We all have things we wish we could do better or that we could stop doing.

The human subconscious mind is always seeking comfort or pleasure. There is tremendous comfort in routine. Repeated actions or thoughts feel good. They give us a sense of comfort, even when the thought or action is not wanted.

When we repeat a thought or action, it becomes a comfortable and acceptable routine. When this routine is repeated, it becomes a habit. This is human nature, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It could be good. If we want to replace a bad habit with a good habit, we can sometimes force ourselves to repeat the good behavior, or thought, until it “feels good” and becomes a new source of comfort for our subconscious mind. The term most commonly heard regarding this is “Sheer Willpower.” Some people find, when they try forcing a change in behavior or thought, it is impossible, or at least, very difficult.

Hypnosis and Meditation Work

That’s where meditation or hypnosis can help. Meditation allows you to think “deep” and relieve some of the stress that prompt bad decisions. Hypnosis, on the other hand, helps guide the subconscious so it doesn’t interfere with your conscious decisions. In other words, hypnosis helps you to de-program your subconscious programming causing your bad decisions.

Hypnosis works like this. If you’re a smoker, for instance, you know intellectually that smoking is harmful to your health. But, you continue to smoke. Your subconscious at some point received a benefit or comfort of some kind, which allows you to rationalize the bad behavior and have it accepted by the subconscious.

The subconscious does not reason. Only the conscious part of the mind does that. Hypnosis uses positive suggestions to reinforce your desired goal in your subconscious. With hypnosis, you don’t need to force your change in behavior like you do when using sheer willpower. Instead, the change is accepted by the subconscious as if you used your willpower to change it. All this without forcing anything. A comfortable, easy, relaxing way to “get out of your own way!”

This very same technique described above that is so effective for smokers, can be effective for other issues as well, such as, overcoming an unreasonable fear, focusing on a goal, or even improving your golf game.
