All over the world people make personal promises to themselves in an effort to create a better future. This practice dates back to the days of the ancient Roman empire.

According to some researchers, about 60% of us make new year’s resolutions, but only about 8% actually are successful with them for any significant period of time. The reason for this is simple. Resolutions involve two desires. The first is the desire for the result and the second is the desire to do the work required to achieve the result. The first is easy while the latter for many is a painful process… but it doesn’t have to be.

According to a recent survey of 2,000 people, here are the top ten resolutions for 2019.

  1.  – Diet or eating healthier (Over 70%)
  2.  – Exercise more (Over 65%)
  3.  – Lose weight (Over 50%)
  4. – Save more money / spend less money (Over 30%)
  5. – Learn a new skill or hobby (Over 25%)
  6. – Quit Smoking (Over 20%)
  7. – Read more (Over 15%)
  8. – Find a another job (Over 15%)
  9. – Drink less alcohol (Over 15%)
  10. – Spend more time with family and friends (Over 10%)

Making a resolution basically means you are promising to change. But our habits and routine behaviors live in our subconscious minds. To make a change successful and permanent we must reprogram our subconscious.

Take, for example, a person who bites their nails. At some point they were consciously aware of biting their nails, but because the action gave them a form of comfort they continued the practice. Once the practice becomes habit they will bite their nails without even realizing they are doing it. It is difficult to change a behavior when you are consciously unaware of its occurrence.
